light at the end of the tunnel

21k in 4 days. feels like I'm starting all over again.

Start Again?

The past few weeks…2 weeks 2 days to be exact have tested my mind and body. Fatherhood is one hell of a challenge. It makes the Ironman look like a walk in the park! In the Ironman, at least you get to sleep after the race!

However, I’m happy to say in the past 3 days I have done 3 sessions . 2 short 5k runs and a bike ride. I suffered on all of them, and what few months ago would have been a fraction of normal training has left me sore and fatigued.

I aim to try and find the correct or rather manageable training schedule to fit into my new life  and hope i can put the said schedule into practise soon!

The Newton 25 k is next Sunday.  I have yet to decide on starting. I am registered so perhaps if i can get a few decent runs in this week…i may show up.

I WILL NOT QUIT.

Quiet August

Nothing has really happened Triathl0n-wise . This month. At the most,  went to the Specialized Shop and drooled over the SL3 for a while . i just LOVE that bike.. sigh. RM 7800. for just the frame.  hmm…decisions decisions….

Newton 25K run in less than a month. if I'm lucky i can start training in a week or so.

Port Dickson Triathlon 2010

PD Tri is quite a nice race. For the price of the entrance fees, it is relatively well organized and pretty established. The route was the same as last year so those who have done it before have a bit of an advantage. My only comment,I guess is,  for those who are used to the Unlce Chan triathlons, its great – but there were some first timers who could really have used a bit more information about the event. The website could be a  bit more informative on rules and regulations as well as the course route. I had no complaints but if it was my first tri – I'm sure i would have been unnecessarily nervous due to not being very clear on things.

Right. On to the race .PDIT0756

Swim. I weaselled myself into close to  the 2nd row at the swim start. Right behind  the usual suspects(winners) and some proper looking swimmers. It was a bit of a mess, but i didn't have much trouble swimming into people because the front row took off pretty quickly. Well, not surprisingly visibility was poor, goggles fogged up and I lost my way.

I followed  a swimmer on my left and after the U-Turn, i thought i must have cut a corner. Well i was not the only one…so i did my best to get back on track and was in my lane not too long after.

My bike transition was ok. Helmet , belt and go. Everything else was taped to the bike. That works well – ill stick with it.

It took all but 10 minutes to get into a group i caught up with and i stuck with them the whole time. On the way back into bike transition, one guy in my group lost control while undoing his shoes and ended up in the bushes by the road. I’m sure he was not hurt, but a pretty unfair deal considering he did a lot of the pulling.

In the run transition i noticed that a lot of people were really fast in and out. I was ok but the socks did slow me down a bit. I need to think about getting some non blistering shoes to run in and cut down transition time.

DSC-0654

On the run, I gained 5 positions. I was running with my one piece tri suit and it was getting kinda hot. So I took of one shoulder . Didn’t help much and doesn't look too good either. Next time ill leave it on.

I guess the lessons from this race are :

  • Use New Goggles (this time i was lucky not to get Disqualified )
  • Use 2 piece Tri Suit. Its cooler on the run.
  • do Speed work for the run. even at less than 5MinKms, its not enough for a good placing
  • I need to get strong enough on the bike to drop the pack- at least a fair distance fr0m the end to have an advantage for the run( even my fast run only got +5 placing)
  • tape power gel by the top of the pack to the bike so you can rip it off and consume immediately
  • Don’t use the Polar 800PTE for racing ( or figure out how to make it work during the race). My current setup was too complicated and distracting. The HRM does not work during the swim.
  • For these OD don't stop at the drink station if not needed. its faster to run with my own water from the transition.

Well thats it. Hope i get to race again soon. family matters will require my priorities in the months to come.  Will see how my run to work plan works out. I hope it does.

Siemens 10k 2010

Time: 45: 25.  Placed 39th. Still got a medal though. I think they ran out after about an hour.

IMG_2367

Long up hill route to start with. Good tough route. Heart breaking 3k flat and straight road with loads of walkers and fun runners at the end.

Nice goodie bag containing bananas, granola bars and some samples of body wash and facial clenser. All in all good race – well organized with plenty of people and started on time.

PD triathlon in 7 days– I better do some swimming before Friday!  I'm under trained again. sigh.

Eco X Capade – Adventure race

This was not a triathlon, but it sure was fun!

The race is a team event , and since neither me or Mike (my team mate) had put any specific training to the race, we decided to call ourselves “jelly donut”. – very fitting i think. – either that or maybe we could have called ourselves – a six pack of tiger.

My 10 year old Specialized Hard Rock FS finally saw its first race. Unfortunately, Bike0047the 10 year old tyres suffered a massive gash due to some sharp bamboo about an hour into the race. I didn't think it was a big deal so replaced the tube and started again. Before you know it i had gone through my spare and mike’s! so I ran a few Km with the bike and when we got to some flat sections, rode the flat to the next check point and tried to cover the gash with the remaining spent tubes.

The make shift repairs and under inflating the tyre worked well enough and got us through the rest of the day. IMG_2358

Another discipline was rock climbing and abseiling. The biggest problem was actually finding the abseil location . It was pouring rain and the whole area had turned to a mud fest.  Eventually though i found my abseil location and did the 100m decent with some difficulty( 1oom of wet rope is pretty heavy).I waited for Mike and then we did the climbing section.

Cave030I had slowed down significantly by then and was basically just taking it easy. A top  placing  was long gone after the flats and all the getting lost in the woods crap. So just decide to enjoy the day.

The climb was pretty easy and i was done in a few minutes. Thank god it was easy cos I'm no climber!

After the climb we biked to the next check point
(maybe 10km) before leaving the bikes and then running a few kms to the canoes.

We managed to keep the canoe relatively straight and get to the finish. I started to cramp in my inner thighs in the canoe, and i have no idea why since i was not using my legs to row. Strange.

Finish049

Well team Jelly Donut finished in 6hrs 40 mins. I was no where near as tired as i am after similar times in triathlon, but was just as happy. Ill be back next year. - with better equipment and well earned experience!

I Said No to the KL Marathon

This will be my first DNS (did not start). A serious lack of training has caused me to abandon my attempt at a sub 4 hr marathon.

I need to get my willpower back, get my training plan together and focus on the PD triathlon. (one month to go) Time to make my investment in the FFWD race wheels count.

Jogathon Warisan 2010

11km run through the Chinese cemetery in KL. Race is part of efforts to raise awareness to preserve the cemetery as a heritage area of the Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur .

I placed 10th. The run is almost like trail running in some areas with steep climbs on uneven track. The race starts late, and medals are only given at prize giving.

Bring own water next time. Being a charity event, the T-shirt provide by the organizers is mandatory .

Good new experience. Was interviewed by Sin Chew – probably because I look a little different. – nothing to do with my running. Sigh.

NB15k 2010

PR. 1hr 8min.

I missed out on 1oth place. I heard them call out 1oth place as I was 150m from the finish. Must have been that tall guy that overtook me at 12km. Such is life in the world of long distance running. you really have to tough it up all the way to the finish. There is just so much time for a somebody with even a slightly faster pace to catch up.

Next Race KL marathon – which I am really unprepared for. Time to buck up and get out there.

Must do at least a half marathon this week!!

Kenyir Lake Triathlon 2010

This Olympic distance race was fun. Its a challenging course with a friendly atmosphere. This was my fifth triathlon and for a brief moment on the morning of the event, I struggled to get out of bed. Perhaps the tranquil nature of the resort put me in holiday mood.

IMG_2219The swim was a clockwise triangle of 2 loops. I got quite a bit of space at the start and was able to find both direction and pace from a few swimmers in front. No vision problems this time since I had brand new goggles. My one piece “Jagged” Tri suit also fit very nicely.Out of the water in 25mins.

Bike transition was ok. I fumbled about with getting the shoes on while in the saddle and probably lost a minute or two because of it. I need to practise that. The course was the most hilly I have done so far, but probably served as an advantage for lighter riders like myself. I didn’t get accurate time but likely averaged 32kph or so. Being an ITU Olympic Distance, drafting was allowed which makes the ride easier.

Run transition was Ok. Modifications to my elastic laces(tying a dead knot rather than using the stupid ratchet system) enabled me to slip the shoes on with no adjustment. Next time ill ditch the socks and risk blisters.DSC_0101  Hills galore on the run. We started with a huge one (yeah I know it doesn't look that big – YOU try it). right out of transition followed by loads of downhill too.  I need to do more bricks so I can start stronger on the run as well. It took a good 2km to get relaxed before could pick up the pace. The whole time  the gap grew in front of me. Anyway, I think i like the run course the climbs are worth the down hill parts.(see I’m smiling)DSC_0073

All in all 2:31mins. I placed 10th in my age group and got my first ever prize!!

IMG_2227

Entrance fees was RM90, so I think I wont quit my day job just yet.

downtime and planning

Its been a few weeks since Ironman, and I'm starting to feel like I'm slipping into a normal person’s( i.e somebody who does not Triathlon) life again. Its been lots of day to day stuff like browsing malls, surfing the net and watching TV and working.

Well, I have 3 races on my calendar so far so I hope that will perk me up!

  • Kenyir OD : which is next week and I have not trained for!
  • NB 15k which is in May and will be a training run for KL marathon
  • KL Marathon- which is an opportunity to go sub 4hrs.

With that and my personal and work commitments, I can probably afford to do only 2 more this year – target:

  • A strong Finish in Port Dickson
  • Set a New PR in the next available 70.3

Big dreams…but maybe things will sort themselves out…:-)

Langkawi Ironman 2010 Results

I have grown tired of waiting for the Langkawi Ironman website to come back online. I suspect many participants are curious to check on how they did and use the data to improve and plan for the next race.

So here are the Langkawi Ironman 2010 results.(finishers) I managed to save them before the website went down.
